Although Oregon law requires that all automobile insurance policies written in Oregon include personal injury protection (often referred to by the acronym: PIP) coverage, there is no similar requirement for policies that cover motorcycles. Having said that, most or all insurance companies do offer PIP coverage (or similar “medical payment” coverage) as an optional form of coverage. PIP coverage can cover one’s medical care costs; even if they are at fault for causing the accident that gives rise to the need for treatment. In light of the spiraling cost of health care, and the modest expense of adding PIP coverage, Oregon motorcyclists would be well-advised to consult with their insurance sales agent about adding this coverage to their policy.
Heads-up, Oregon motorcycle riders
